The southwest Salt Lake Valley has grown a great deal in recent years in both residences and businesses. Elected officials and transportation planners who served on the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) predicted this growth more than 20 years ago when they identified 11400 South as a critical transportation corridor for the future.
In the 1990s, local cities and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) also recognized the importance of 11400 South improvements in their Transportation Master Plans and Statewide Transportation Improvement Projects, respectively. For the last 10 years, UDOT has studied, planned, collected public input and completed the necessary work pursuant to a new interchange and a widened, connected 11400 South.
Since at least 2003, major intersections and interchanges in the area have operated above capacity, especially during rush hours. Traffic congestion is expected to increase over the next 20 years, which could cause increased delays, threaten emergency response times and negatively influence residents' quality of life.
On the other hand, a healthy transportation system helps communities "maintain, protect and improve quality of life." A strong transportation network makes it easier for people to move freely around their community and supports the needs of a growing residential population and commercial base.
