5400 SOUTH WIDENING
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) completed a State Environmental Study for 5400 South from Bangerter Highway to 4800 West in the communities of Kearns and Taylorsville. The need to widen 5400 South was identified by local community leaders and formalized in the Wasatch Front Regional Council Long Range Plan. For more information see the Project History.
UDOT will continue to partner with Salt Lake County to communicate with the public during construction. Ongoing public communication will help UDOT improve traffic and safety in the area while minimizing impacts to residents, businesses and the traveling public.
CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE
PROJECT DETAILS
Work will generally take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and most Saturdays. Work activities and schedules are subject to change. Please contact us with the information below if you have any questions or concerns.
UDOT will complete the following construction activities this construction season:
- Complete minor road widening, add sidewalk and add raised median from Bangerter Highway to 4015 West
- Prepare the access for the High-T intersection (left-in, left-out access to former Kmart location) to be installed
- Install storm drain at Northwest Avenue
- Place a surface seal on the entire project roadway
- Stripe the entire project roadway including dual-left/dual-right turn lanes at Cougar Lane and three-foot shoulders along 5400 South to provide a “Share the Road” area for bicyclists

Current Activities
Through Late-June: Traffic will be down to one lane on eastbound 5400 South from Bangerter Highway to 4015 West while crews install drainage. Crews will place street plates as needed to maintain business accesses. Each access will be affected for up to an hour as crews lay pipe from west to east.
Through Late-June: Traffic will be down to one or two lanes periodically at 5400 South and Cougar Lane while crews install signal poles.
Through Late-July: Traffic will be down to one lane on westbound 5400 South from 4460 West to Cougar Lane and Northwest Avenue will be closed at 5400 South for storm drain installation. Please use alternate routes.
