BACKGROUND
Project History
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has completed a State Environmental Study for 5400 South from Bangerter Highway to 4800 West in the communities of Kearns and Taylorsville.
This study was initiated after local government leaders recommended a transportation improvement for 5400 South. Widening 5400 South has been suggested for many years on several iterations of the Wasatch Front Regional Council's (WFRC) Regional Transportation Plan. It is most recently included in the WFRC Draft 2040 Long-Range Transportation Plan.
The 2040 Long-Range Plan recommends widening as a "Phase 1" project meaning that it is prioritized to be completed before 2015. In 2010, the Utah State Legislature passed Senate Bill 215, which provided funding for this project along with other priority transportation projects in Salt Lake County.
Why Widen 5400 South?
UDOT identified the following transportation issues on 5400 South.
- Bottlenecks at 4015 West and 4800 West.
- Traffic volumes will more than double by 2040 causing delays and congestion
- Travel times expected to increase 30 to 60 percent by the year 2040
- The accident rate is double that of roadways with similar characteristics
- Provides a vital east-west link in the regional transportation network
Traffic Will More Than Double By 2040
Congestion and Intersection Delay is Increasing
