5400 SOUTH WIDENING
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) completed a State Environmental Study for 5400 South from Bangerter Highway to 4800 West in the communities of Kearns and Taylorsville. The need to widen 5400 South was identified by local community leaders and formalized in the Wasatch Front Regional Council Long Range Plan. For more information see the Project History.
UDOT will continue to partner with Salt Lake County to communicate with the public during construction. Ongoing public communication will help UDOT improve traffic and safety in the area while minimizing impacts to residents, businesses and the traveling public.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES
May 14, 5-8 p.m., Project representatives will be at the Taste of Kearns event at Kearns High School to give information and answer questions about the project.
Through May 19, Crews will be installing a new gas line along the north side of 5400 South from 4220 West to Northwest Avenue.
This work will require the removal of the sidewalk and parts of driveways in this area. UDOT will patch the sidewalk and driveways with dirt so residents may still use their driveways until UDOT replaces them before the project is complete. Crews will impact each property for about a day within the above timeframe. There may be a few hours where individual residents will not be able to access their driveways. Questar representatives will try to notify residents of driveway impacts ahead of time.
Guardians of children who walk to Kearns Junior High and Oquirrh Hills Elementary from the south side of 5400 South, please note:
The sidewalks on the north and south sides of 5400 South from 4460 West to 4620 West will be closed. Please show children the safest route to school. To avoid the construction area, the project team recommends walking north on 4620 West to 5215 South (Sams Blvd). "Sidewalk Closed" signs will show pedestrians the areas to avoid.
Through May 21, After they are finished installing new gas lines, crews will finish installing sewer lines to the homes directly on the north side of 5400 South from 4420 West to 4620 West. Each property owner should expect to see crews on their property for one day within the above timeframe.
Crews will be removing grass; some curb, gutter and sidewalk; and fences. Crews may also park trucks in the construction easement areas approximately 10 to 15 feet into each property. Crews will adhere to the property acquisition contracts negotiated with each property owner.
While utility interruptions are always possible, this work is not expected to interrupt household utilities. The Kearns Improvement District will connect the sewer lines to each home at a future date.
Through May 24, Crews will be installing sewer lines starting at 4015 West on Sams Blvd. then continuing to 4140 West to 5345 South to 4220 West to 5400 South and stopping at 4120 West.
May 14- Traffic will be one lane in each direction on 4015 West around the Sams Blvd./4015 West intersection while crews pave the area.
Crews will keep one lane open in each direction and close the center turn lane on Sams Blvd. from 4015 West to 4140 West. Flaggers will assist in this area.
May 14-15 - There will be one lane open with flaggers on 4140 West and it will be open to local traffic. Please try to take alternate routes where possible.
May 15-18 - Traffic on 5345 South and 4220 West will be closed. Before beginning this work, UDOT will contact businesses that cannot access their work buildings from another road to coordinate access. Crews will watch for traffic so they can let employees in as needed. Please take alternate routes where possible.
May 19-24 - From May 19-22 traffic will be one lane in each direction on 5400 South from 4220 West to 4120 West except during peak traffic when there will be two lanes in the peak direction. From May 23-24 work on 5400 South will be done at night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. with one lane open and flaggers.
For safety, plates will be placed over all holes and trenches and all lanes will be open while crews are not working. Please ask children not to play around construction zones.
Through June 4, 5500 South, 5540 South and 5580 South and driveways on the west side of 4015 West from 5400 South to 5615 South will be closed. Please continue to park along the side streets during this time.
Crews will relocate a gas line and continue to replace the curb, gutter, sidewalks and some storm drain pipe along the west side of 4015 West. Residents will be able to access their homes from 5615 South and 4120 West.
Through Summer, Crews will be installing gas lines on the north and south sides of 5400 South from 4015 West to 4420 West. UDOT will maintain business accesses during this work.
This work will require crews to remove sidewalk, curb and gutter on the north and south sides of 5400 South.
COMING UP
May 23 - June 2, Crews will install a new gas line and remove the curb, gutter and sidewalks along the east side of 4015 West between, but not including, Firestone and the Post Office. Crews will maintain business accesses along 4015 West but will need to affect each access for a few hours. Crews will typically work on only half of an access at a time and will put in plates to cover trenches as needed. About a month after the gas line is replaced, crews will replace the curb, gutter and sidewalk.
ONGOING
Through the end of the project, traffic on 5400 South from Bangerter Highway to 4800 West will be one lane in each direction except during peak traffic times. UDOT opens two lanes of traffic in the eastbound direction from 6-9 a.m. and two lanes of traffic in the westbound direction from 3-7 p.m.
Work will most often take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and most Saturdays. There is the possibility of night work on some occasions.
PLEASE NOTE
All timeframes are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors but the project team will work to notify residents of any changes. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve 5400 South. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
