3500 South & Bangerter Highway CFI

A study of the 3500 South area showed that the intersection at Bangerter Highway contributed to congestion and safety problems.  Heavy rush hour traffic forced drivers to wait for up to four cycles of the traffic signal to get through the intersection.  Congestion at this intersection had a ripple effect on the other intersections on both 3500 South and Bangerter Highway.  The study also estimated that traffic through the intersection will increase 31% by 2030.  The solution UDOT has implemented is a Continuous Flow Intersection or CFI.

What is CFI?

UDOT implemented Utah's first CFI (continuous flow intersection) at 3500 South and Bangerter Highway in September 2007 to improve traffic flow through the area.  CFI is a new approach to intersection design.  Compared to a traditional intersection, it reduces the steps in the light cycle and places left turns along a safer path.

Tips for Safe CFI Driving

  1. Pay careful attention to, and obey all, new signs, signals and road markings.
  2. There's no need to stop in the new right turn lanes onto Bangerter, but please yield to pedestrians and cyclists.
  3. If you miss your right or left turn, go to the next safe place to turn around.
  4. Pedestrians, remember to push the button to cross.  CFI gives ample time to cross if you push the button.
