The origins of the Dixie Drive Interchange project came about as a result of the Bluff Street Corridor Study, which was completed in July of 2007. As part of the Bluff Street Corridor Study, the Bluff Street Interchange was analyzed with regards to future traffic volumes, existing deficiencies, safety, and operations. The analysis showed that with the rapid projected growth in the area, any improvements that could reasonably be made to the Bluff Street Interchange itself would be overburdened during peak-hour travel by 2015. The Bluff Street Corridor Study made the following conclusions about the Bluff Street and Dixie Drive interchanges:
Recommended improving the existing Bluff Street Interchange to a tight diamond urban interchange (currently under construction) to provide capacity for the 2015 travel demand.
Indicated 2035 travel demands could not be met with improvements at Bluff Street alone – a concept was developed to provide a new interchange at Dixie Drive that would be interconnected with the Bluff Street Interchange
As a result of this study, the current project was initiated and is now in the environmental phase of analysis.
