East-West Connector

The Utah Department of Transportation recently completed a study of community transportation needs and potential impacts of an east-west corridor between I-15 and Redwood Road. Geographical boundaries of the study include the area north of Utah Lake, from Redwood Road to I-15; and south of Lehi Main Street to about 1500 South.

On April 10, UDOT presented a proposed design and a draft of the environmental study to the public. UDOT is now continuing to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to finalize the wetland permitting process and will move forward with the final project design and right-of-way acquisition. Upon Corps approval, construction can begin. Construction is expected to last from Fall 2008 to Fall 2010.

The East-West Connector is a fully-funded, high priority project that will bring much needed relief from the current traffic congestion.

Why Study This Area?

Growth and development in northwestern Utah County is rapidly accelerating. According to the projections from the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget, population is likely to increase by nearly 250 percent between 2000 and 2030. The total employment base in the study area is expected to increase by more than 400 percent over the next 30 years. However, the area's existing east-west roadways are already experiencing congestion, especially at peak hours of the day, which is why UDOT is preparing today for what is inevitable tomorrow.

As part of this study, UDOT has examined possible solutions to the transportation challenges that will accommodate future growth through 2030. This information-gathering period included evaluating both roadway and transit options; also information related to the impacts of a connector on the environment such as: wetlands, flood plains, historic properties, wildlife habitat, existing and planned trail systems, school and pedestrian locations, important farm lands and agricultural protection zones.

Several transportation studies besides the East-West Connector are taking place in northwestern Utah County. Some of these studies -- such as the Mountain View Corridor -- are generating several questions from Utah County residents. The East-West Connector is not studying the area north of Lehi Main Street. Areas such as 2100 North and the Point of the Mountain are not being addressed by our study. While the East-West Connector team is coordinating with representatives of these other studies, we cannot address public comments about them. To find out more about those projects and to submit comments to the appropriate study teams, visit the links to nearby studies on the left side of this page.
