Reduced Congestion - Carpoolers and solo drivers in the Express Lanes reduce traffic congestion for drivers in all lanes.
Efficiency - The goal of the electronic system is to ensure that the lanes carry their maximum capacity, while keeping speeds above 55 mph.
Predictable Commute - Be on time more often with speeds usually at least 55 mph.
Dynamic Pricing - The electronic system uses an algorithm that adjusts the price of driving in each zone based on congestion.
Carpool Benefits - Most Express Lane users are carpoolers. When you carpool, you continue to use the Express Lanes for free while reducing the number of vehicles on the road.
Enforcement – Indication lights, often found behind the Express Pass signs, help enforce the Express Lanes and keep congestion low. A green light indicates the Express Pass was read and charged. Yellow indicates the pass wasn’t read and that law enforcement will check if the driver is carpooling. Blue indicates a negative balance on the account or a lost/stolen device.
