By fall 2010, solo drivers who want to use the Express Lanes will pay only for the access they actually use. The lanes will be divided into four payment zones. Pricing for each zone will be based on congestion levels with costs highest during peak traffic times. This dynamic pricing approach will allow UDOT to better manage traffic in the Express Lanes to ensure that carpoolers continue to see the benefit of speeds above 55 mph.
Electronic overhead signs will show drivers the cost for each zone before they enter and the online account will be debited for each zone traveled through. The price range for solo driver use of the Express Lanes has not yet been decided. UDOT will make a recommendation to the transportation commission based on public opinion research, traffic analysis and pricing ranges in other states.
As always, carpoolers, buses, C plate vehicles and motorcycles are the first priority in the Express Lanes and may continue to use them without charge. Until UDOT implements the new system, solo drivers may continue to pay $50/month to use the lanes.
