Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we studying the I-15 Corridor?

Traffic volumes are projected to increase along the I-15 corridor between mileposts 0 and 16:

  • Existing (2008): 20,000-43,000 vehicles per day
  • Projected (2035): 46,000-120,000 vehicles per day

Other traffic related issues that will be evaluated/addressed in the I-15 Environmental Assessment (EA) include the following:

  • Corridor Deficiencies (horizontal and vertical alignments, ramps, shoulders, clearances, structures)
  • I-15 Mainline Travel Lanes (standard, auxiliary, climbing, and specialty lanes)
  • Interchanges (potential modifications to MP 2, 4, 8, 10, 16)

What is the intended outcome of the project?

An EA will be developed to identify transportation needs on I-15 between mileposts 0 and 16, discuss alternatives, and evaluate any social, economic, and environmental impacts.

What is an Environmental Assessment?

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to consider environmental issues before making any major decision on projects that have federal involvement. An EA helps FHWA and UDOT determine whether a project would have significant impacts on the environment. If there are no significant impacts, a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) is issued and the project can move forward to design and construction. If the project would have significant impacts, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) must be prepared.
