Child Access Routing Plans

Children's safety while traveling to and from school is a major concern for parents, school teachers and administrators, and public officials. To address this issue, each Utah elementary, middle, and junior high school is required by law to create a Child Access Routing Plan (CARP). A CARP includes an inventory map, which shows traffic signals, stop and yield signs, and crosswalks; and a route map, which is an outline of walking routes to and from the school, with the school's preferred route displayed.

Many people are involved in the process of creating a CARP, including parents, school officials, community councils, local jurisdictions, police and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). By implementing a CARP, schools can address community concerns and ensure that safety initiatives are meeting student safety needs.
