Student
Neighborhood Access Program (SNAP)
Children's safety while traveling to and from school is a major concern for parents, school teachers and administrators, and public officials. To address this issue, each Utah elementary, middle, and junior high school is required by law to create a
child access routing plan. To facilitate
this the Utah Department of
Transportation (UDOT) has created the
Student Neighborhood Access Program
(SNAP). A SNAP Plan includes an inventory map, which shows traffic signals, stop and yield signs, and crosswalks; and a route map, which is an outline of walking routes to and from the school, with the school's preferred route displayed.
Many people are involved in the process of creating a
SNAP Plan, including parents, school officials, community councils, local jurisdictions, police and
UDOT. By implementing a SNAP Plan, schools can address community concerns and ensure that safety initiatives are meeting student safety needs.
