900 South Closure The 900 South access to Main Street and southbound I-15 will close later this fall. This closure will be permanent as traffic configurations will change with construction of the new interchange; no access to southbound I-15 or Main Street from 900 South will be accommodated with this project. A cul-de-sac on 900 South west of the railroad tracks will be constructed as part of this project. Accelerated Bridge Construction Accelerated Bridge Construction will be used for the new interchange at milepost 330. Two bridge spans will be constructed in staging areas adjacent to I-15 and moved into place using Self-Propelled Modular Transports (SPMT’s). Bridge construction will begin following the demolition on August 29. The bridge moves will take place summer of 2010. This innovative process will significantly expedite project completion. Main Street Design Update The following link contains the design for Main Street improvements and information about parking and medians: Main Street Design Parking The project team understands the importance of the parking area on the east side of Main Street. UDOT has evaluated the roadway configuration and determined that the entire parking area will not be required at this time and parking will still be available to adjacent businesses. However, there is the potential that the remainder of the state right-of-way will be required to accommodate future traffic volumes due to growth in the Layton area. UDOT and Layton City have met a number of times to resolve this matter. From those meetings it was determined that UDOT will provide similar but not the same parking on Main Street for a period of ten years. During this period, UDOT has requested that Layton City and the local businesses work together to develop and build parking areas off of the state roadway. Raised Medians A raised median will be placed on Main Street to separate northbound and southbound traffic. The median will improve safety and overall traffic efficiency by controlling the flow of traffic and limiting turns to specific locations. A second raised median will be located between northbound traffic and the parking area adjacent to the east side businesses. UPDATE (11/2/09): As part of the South Layton Interchange project, there has been much discussion over the past few months regarding the purpose and need for raised center medians on Main Street. Research and experience have shown that raised medians significantly increase motorist safety by decreasing vehicle conflict points. They also provide operational benefits to keep traffic moving in busy travel corridors. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) stands by these assertions. While UDOT intends to eventually install the median as originally planned, several adjustments have been made to accommodate rising construction costs, budgetary constraints and public input. UDOT has determined to scale back Main Street median improvements between Gentile Street and Church Street. Current plans call for a raised center median to extend from the beginning of the southbound left-turn pocket to the Gentile Street intersection. This will create a separation between northbound travel lanes and the southbound left-turn pocket. In accordance with the more limited project scope, center median will not be constructed north of the turn pocket to Church Street at this time. Updated design plans are expected to be available for public review by mid- to late-November 2009. As funds become available, the median will be extended continuously to Church Street. Plans remain intact to install the raised median between Gentile Street and Layton Parkway with a median break at the northern access to the Utah Transit Authority's FrontRunner Station.
