3500 South Continuous Flow Intersection
Issue
With an estimated traffic increase of 31% by 2030, a UDOT study of the 3500 South area showed that the intersection at Bangerter Highway contributed to congestion and safety problems. Heavy rush hour traffic forced drivers to wait for up to four cycles of the traffic signal to get through the intersection. Congestion at this intersection has a ripple effect on other intersections on both 3500 South and Bangerter Highway.
Solution
UDOT implemented Utah’s first CFI (continuous flow intersection) at 3500 South and Bangerter Highway. The new intersection improved traffic flow through the area with the use of an innovative new approach to intersection design. Compared to a traditional intersection, it reduces the steps in the light cycle and places left turns along a safer path.
UDOT was committed to keep communication flowing between the businesses impacted by construction and the construction project personnel. A Business Advisory Committee participated in monthly meetings to discuss ideas on how businesses could work together to cope with construction, answer questions about the project and talk about project related issues.

Results
The project was completed in September 2007 and has been successful in easing congestion. Motorists were able to navigate the intersection with little confusion due to the educational campaign.
