Railroad Safety
The Utah Legislature has charged UDOT with regulating and promoting safety at all locations in the state where public roads cross railroad tracks. This includes state highways, county roads, city streets, and all other public accesses across rail lines. UDOT does not regulate private crossings, although they are tracked in the national inventory kept by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
Links to a variety of topics related to railroad safety in Utah are available in the Subtopic Listing below. The FRA Database link contains an inventory of all public and private roadway/railroad crossings. It also provides information about crashes involving railroads. Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public education program that strives to end deaths and injuries that occur at railroad crossings and within railroad rights-of-way. The Railroad Operators subtopic contains links to companies and agencies that own and operate railroads in Utah.
