Welcome to Pioneer Crossing

Pioneer Crossing will be a new east-west connector from American Fork through Lehi to Saratoga Springs. The project also includes improvements to the I-15 interchange at American Fork Main Street and a new 60-inch water main.

During the past decade, northern Utah County has experienced tremendous growth. Projections indicate it will continue for the next several years. UDOT's Pioneer Crossing project will help address many of the area's current and future transportation needs.

The two-year construction project will produce:

  • Pioneer Crossing, a new, five-lane urban arterial from Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs to 300 East in Lehi.
  • Seven lanes of Pioneer Crossing from 300 East in Lehi to American Fork Main Street.
  • A new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at I-15 and American Fork Main Street, which will replace the existing diamond interchange.
  • I-15 widened to six lanes (5 plus one Express Lane) in each direction through the interchange (to tie in to the upcoming I-15 widening project).
  • A new 60-inch water main from Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs to 300 East in Lehi.

Now that the weather is warm, construction zones can be an attractive spot for young people to play. To help you and your children stay safe near construction zones, UDOT distributes safety notices to neighborhoods and teaches safety rules at schools.

Construction Schedule

Construction on the Pioneer Crossing project is expected to last from January 2009 - October 2010.

Once the project is complete, residents, commuters and business owners should experience:

  • Improved east-west travel from Saratoga Springs through Lehi to American Fork, including relief on existing east-west roadways (such as Lehi Main Street).
  • Improved traffic flow at the I-15 interchange.
  • Safe and efficient access to neighborhoods, schools and businesses.

Pioneer Crossing is a fully funded, high priority project that has been allocated $250 million of state funds.

**Note: Although several sections of the concrete pavement have been placed, work is not complete. Please do not drive on the new road.

I-15 Interchange at American Fork Main Street:

Main Street Area (East of I-15) - Signal work continues at Kawakami Drive. Crews will set poles at the north side of intersection before Thanksgiving. The new signal will be operational by Nov 30.

Crews are installing drainage basins and curb and gutter along the south side of Main Street as they prepare to divert traffic onto the south side of Main Street.

The bridge transitions have been poured and crews are placing the final concrete and asphalt segments leading up to the new interchange bridge. Traffic will be diverted onto the bridge beginning Nov. 30.

Once motorists have been switched onto the new bridge, Crews will build new ramp connections from I-15 southbound and to I-15 northbound. Each of these ramps will be closed during the night of Dec. 1.The old interchange bridge will be removed the first weekend in December (Dec. 5-6).

Nov. 23. I-15 southbound will be restricted to three lanes in each direction (the Express Lanes will be closed) at the interchange to American Fork Main Street, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for barrier work. Motorists should expect moderate travel delays.

Please use caution when exiting and entering the interstate and expect slight travel delays as trucks, heavy equipment and construction crews are working nearby. Flaggers are posted to guide motorists through the construction area.

I-15 Travel Lane Changes: The travel lanes along I-15 near the American Fork Main Street interchange have been narrowed to 11 feet and the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph. Please remember, fines for speeding violations are doubled in construction zones.

Mill Pond Road Area (Lehi to I-15 in American Fork):

North Area - Crews have placed the footings for the retaining wall for the north embankment of the Mill Pond Bridge. Crews will build the retaining walls and place embankment. Trucks will be working well into the night. As trucks will be accessing this area, motorists should anticipate moderate travel delays. Flaggers will be posted to guide drivers through the work zone. This work will continue through mid-January.

Crews have widened 80 North (between 1020 and 900 West) to improve traffic flow within this area.

South Area - The retaining walls are in place. Crews will continue to place additional material on the embankment through the first week in December. Construction of the bridge support walls (abutments) will begin the first of December.

Mill Pond Road south of the intersection with 8020 North in Lehi (south of the UPRR tracks) will remain closed until late spring 2010. Residents traveling north and south in this area can use 200 South to 300 West in American Fork or 300 East to 700 South in Lehi as alternatives.

300 East to Mill Pond Area (Lehi):

Crews have placed the first concrete sections of the road between 300 East and the new bridge at Mill Pond Road. Paving operations are on hold until spring 2010.

Utility and irrigation work continues.

500 West to 300 East Area (Lehi):

Paving of this area is on hold until spring 2010. Crews will finish utility line connections and irrigation work during the next few weeks.
1100 West to 500 West Area (Lehi):

In December, crews will prepare the roadway area for curb, gutter and sidewalk.
1700 West to 1100 West Area (Lehi):

Excavation for the trail undercrossing for the future Dry Creek trail is underway. Crews are installing gas lines in this area.

The intersection at 1700 West is open.

2300 West to 1700 West Area (Lehi):

Crews will build the base layers for the sidewalk. Sidewalk will be placed as weather allows.
Redwood Road to 2300 West Area (Lehi/ Saratoga Springs):

Jordan River Bridge to 2300 West - Installation of utility accesses, storm drain lines and landscaping will continue through mid-December.

Jordan River Bridge Area - Crews are building the forms and rebar framework for the bridge transition areas and bridge deck. The concrete bridge deck will be placed by mid-December.

Crews will finish installing the 60-inch water line under the Jordan River before Thanksgiving. Once the pipeline is installed, crews will remove the temporary bridge crossing and restore the embankments along the river.

The Jordan River Parkway Trail remains closed approximately one mile north of the trailhead at Wetlands Park in Saratoga Springs. Please do not attempt to cross through the work zone as there are large dump trucks driving through the area. Trail users can access the trail at Willow Park in Lehi. The trail will re-open in its new configuration next spring.

Redwood Road to Jordan River Area - The underground work for the traffic signal at Redwood Road and street lighting is complete. Crews will set signal poles and street lights towards the middle of December. Sidewalk construction continues.

General Project Information

General work hours are between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For specific construction tasks, such as concrete paving, there will be night work. Please use caution and slow down as you travel through the construction area as crews, large trucks and other heavy equipment are working nearby. For the safety of the public, we encourage all area residents - especially children - to keep out of the construction area.
