UDOT strives to reach a goal of zero fatalities on Utah's highways. To achieve this goal the Department funds programs and projects that not only make improvements to the roadways but also programs that help educate.
Safety improvement projects are able to increase safety in areas by making upgrades to the roadways. For example constructing wildlife crossings and fencing, building truck ramps, installing median barrier and rumble strips and widening intersections and adding turning lanes.
Education is an important aspect to improving safety since people's behaviors are a major factor in highway fatalities. The Safe Routes to School program not only makes improvements to roadways but also educates parents, teachers and students how to make walking and biking to school safe activities.
