Date: October 26, 2009
Riverdale Road Construction Activities - October 26, 2009 - Heavy Construction Activities Continue this Week!
October 26, 2009 - Concrete Paving to Continue...Weather Permitting!
Crews completed placing the surface known as the "Asphalt Leveling Course" from 40th Street to the Ruby River Restaurant. This course allows the crews to come back with the "white" or concrete paving equipment and gurantee a smooth, level finish on the new concrete. Concrete paving will continue throughout this week, although it is subject to weather delays.
In the meantine, UDOT remains confident the a minimum of 5 lanes of traffic will be flowing by the time the Holiday Shopping kicks-off at Thanksgiving.
Riverdale Road Activities: The accesses to the Shopko Center and to 550 West will be shifted as construction begins on those approaches. Please watch for detour signs in order to prevent delays.
Riverdale Road Businesses are Open and Easily Accessible!
We encourage all motorists to please use Riverdale Road as there are very minimal impacts to traffic flow and all business accesses are open throughout the daytime hours. We strongly encourage the public to maintain "a business as usual" attitude to help the businesses deal with the effects of the economy and of the construction.
Please exercise extremely caution when driving through this and any other construction zone. Heavy equipment can be entering and exiting the roadways at any time. Thank you and drive safely!
No Cone Zone from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day
The Riverdale Road project team is suspending major construction work for the holidays. Seven traffic lanes will be open from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day from I-84 to Chimes View Drive, providing greater convenience to drivers and more accessibility to shoppers.
The seven open lanes include a new lane in each direction from the Weber River viaduct to Chimes View Drive. Some of the open lanes will be on new pavement with others on the existing roadway. Construction cones and major work will disappear until early next year, when crews will complete widening and paving center and southbound lanes.
Other work to be completed in 2010 includes utility work, signal improvements, additions to traffic monitoring and detection systems, sidewalks, curb and gutter replacement. The project is on schedule for completion in Summer 2010.
The project team thanks drivers for their patience during construction. Their courtesy and cooperation have helped the project run smoothly and stay on schedule for completion next year.
Background
Riverdale Road is a keystone transportation corridor, bridging communities in Weber County. Roadway, bridge and interchange improvements have long been anticipated by the community and will impact the future of transportation in the region.
Riverdale Road is one of the busiest non-freeways in Utah, servicing an annual daily average of 47,000 vehicles. The performance of the road impacts the vitality of its surrounding community in many ways:
- The road is a major east-west thoroughfare linking western Weber County to downtown Ogden. The road travels through four cities from Roy through Riverdale and South Ogden to Ogden.
- The road provides UTA with a public transit route that bridges many communities, and is less than a mile from the connecting point of two interstate freeways.
- The dense commercial area lining Riverdale Road draws shoppers from throughout the Ogden/Weber region.
- Riverdale Road links two halves of Riverdale City, with civic and recreational facilities, commercial and residential growth on both sides.
UDOT's Riverdale Road improvement project will reduce congestion and improve safety. UDOT has accelerated the construction schedule by hiring the contractor early. The contractor's involvement in the design phase and ability to perform advance work will reduce the duration of construction by several months. The benefits of the project to motorists, businesses and other stakeholders will include:
- Increasing the corridor's capacity to handle traffic by 35%, which is expected to accommodate traffic through 2030.
- Reducing travel time through the corridor by 25%.
- Reducing average traffic delays at intersections by 40% through 2030.
- Providing safe and efficient access to all businesses and properties.
- Minimizing delays of future pavement, bridge, and/or utility maintenance.
- Increasing safety and traffic flow by decreasing vehicle conflicts.
