Project Overview

The purpose of the project is to improve mobility and safety along Riverdale Road. Upon project completion, Riverdale Road will be better equipped to handle peak levels of traffic now and in the future, through the year 2030. Congestion will be reduced and safety increased with the following:

  • Adding one lane each direction between I-15 and Wall Avenue.
  • Adding an eastbound lane between Chimes View Drive and Wall Avenue.
  • Rebuilding the I-84 interchange to a more efficient single point urban interchange (SPUI).
  • Replacing the I-15 structure with a wider structure.
  • Building low-maintenance 40-year concrete pavement.
  • Installing additional turn lanes at major intersections.
  • Replacing all traffic signals with state-of-the-art vehicle detection and coordination.
  • Constructing bus pullouts and consolidating driveways.
  • Installing CCTV and traffic monitoring stations at I-15 and I-84 for the CommuterLink traffic information system.
  • Upgrading underground drainage, water, sewer, and other utilities along the corridor.

The Riverdale Road project will benefit motorists, businesses, and other stakeholders by:

  • Increasing the corridor's capacity to handle traffic by 35%, which is expected to accommodate traffic through 2030.
  • Reducing travel time through the corridor by 25%.
  • Reducing average traffic delays at intersections by 40% through 2030.
  • Providing safe and efficient access to all businesses and properties.
  • Minimizing delays of future pavement, bridge, and/or utility maintenance.
  • Increasing safety and traffic flow by decreasing vehicle conflicts.

Project Funding

The project is currently funded from I-84 to the viaduct (Weber River). Additional funds are not yet available for the I-15 bridge replacement and improvements from the viaduct to Washington Boulevard.
