SR-68 Design/Build Process

UDOT is pursuing the SR-68 widening under a process known as Design/Build. While a traditional transportation project is designed fully before being turned over to a contractor for construction, the design/build method allows both processes to occur almost simultaneously, expediting project delivery considerably.

Under design/build, a design team works to finalize design of specific areas within a project to allow construction to begin. Design then proceeds in other areas, even as construction gets underway. The two processes then proceed in tandem, accelerating project completion.

A critical component of the design/build process' success is right-of-way acquisition. As design is finalized in specific areas and specific property impacts are known, the project team's right-of-way staff will work with the property owners on a case-by-case basis on any necessary acquisition process. Until design is finalized, however, specific property impacts cannot be determined so the right-of-way process may take several months.  For more general information on the right-of-way process, visit the UDOT Right-of-Way Division Web site by clicking the quick link at left.
