1. What is the schedule for widening S.R. 108 to three lanes?

Construction began in summer 2009 and work is expected to continue through late fall as weather permits. Some remaining work may be completed in 2010. Any remaining work will be completed in 2010.

2. What will the three-lane project include?

  • One lane in each direction (from Antelope Drive in Syracuse to 1900 West in West Haven)
  • A center turn lane along the length of the corridor (in some areas, a center turn lane already exists)
  • Adding right-turn lanes at select intersections
  • Resurfacing the roadway
Sidewalks, curb, gutter and bike lanes are generally not part of this plan; however, in a few areas, new sidewalk, curb, and gutter will be installed to provide connections and facilitate drainage.

3. What will traffic impacts be during construction?

One lane of traffic will be open in each direction most of the time and crews will generally work during weekday hours, though some weekend shifts may occasionally be needed.

4. Drainage is an issue in winter and spring - how will this help?

Minor drainage improvements are included in the three-lane project. In a few areas, new drains will be installed and the shoulder will be graded to improve drainage.

5. Will UDOT be purchasing right-of-way for the three-lane project?

Most of the work can be done within the existing UDOT right-of-way. The purchase of large property parcels (i.e., homes or businesses) is not needed for the three-lane project. Some small strips of property are required to complete the project. Learn more about right-of-way at www.udot.utah.gov .

6. What will happen to my mailbox and mail delivery during construction?

Many roadside mailboxes within the construction area will be relocated or replaced by contractor crews at no expense to property owners. When possible, an existing mailbox will be remounted on a new post if the box is in useable condition. Utah regulations require mailboxes on state roads to be 9 feet from the edge of the travel lane, and mounted on break-away wooden posts for safety reasons. Temporary mailboxes may be required. No interruption in mail service is expected.

7. Will my landscaping near the roadway be impacted by construction?

Widening the road may require removal of landscaping features – mainly trees, shrubs and irrigation systems – if located within state right-of-way. If landscaping is in UDOT right-of-way, it is ultimately the responsibility of the property owner to remove or preserve those features prior to construction.

If landscaping on private property needs to be moved or replaced because of construction, UDOT will coordinate with the property owners on appropriate compensation. UDOT understands the investment many homeowners have made in improvements over the years, and is open to working with property owners on an individual basis to preserve as much landscaping as possible.

8. Can I get into my driveway during construction?

Crews will maintain reasonable access to your property as much as possible. Inevitably, there will be some impacts during construction. For instance, new pavement requires 1-2 hours to set up. When crews are paving in front of driveways, access will be eliminated or very limited. Advance notice will be provided and crews will work as quickly as possible to restore access. Residents are asked to give the project team advance notification of any special considerations pertaining to access.

9. Will parking be allowed on S.R. 108?

On-street parking may be restricted in areas of active construction. In some areas, on-street parking may be eliminated once the three-lane project is complete. When construction crews are working in your area, please do not park in the work zone.

10. Will there be overnight construction noise?

To expedite the project, some construction activities may happen during evening hours. Because of the large concentration of residences on the corridor, night work will be kept to a minimum. UDOT will work with local municipalities and comply with their respective noise ordinance requirements.

11. How will construction be phased?

Crews will work in several areas at once, rather than working on the entire corridor continuously. By dividing work into localized areas, construction time at each location can be reduced. The goal is to minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists.

12. Are any utility interruptions expected?

Temporary interruptions in utility service are possible while crews relocate utilities. Advance notice will be provided to property owners if this becomes necessary.

13. How is the three-lane project funded?

Funding comes from the state general fund. There has been much discussion recently about the Federal stimulus money, but this does not affect S.R. 108.
