In recent years, northern Utah County has experienced accelerated growth, creating a need for additional roadway infrastructure. The Vineyard Connector project has been identified by local communities and the Mountainland Association of Governments as an important part of the long-term solution for northern Utah County transportation needs. Located between the northern shores of Utah Lake and the I-15 freeway corridor, the Vineyard Connector will provide an alternative roadway west of I-15 as well as a primary access road for ongoing development in the communities of American Fork, Lindon, Vineyard and Orem. It will also provide access to commuter rail stations planned for American Fork and Vineyard.
The environmentally studied and approved Vineyard Connector route begins near I-15's American Fork Main Street interchange, taking off from the new Pioneer Crossing roadway and heading east and south through American Fork, Lindon and Vineyard before connecting with 800 North at Geneva Road in Orem. When the Vineyard Connector is completed, it will join with Pioneer Crossing to allow motorists to travel west-east all the way from Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs to 800 North in Orem on new five-lane, limited access roadways.
The Vineyard Connector environmental study was completed in late 2008. Following the 2009 session of the Utah State Legislature, the State Transportation Commission designated $65 million to be used for corridor preservation for Vineyard Connector. Access Utah County right of way agents are currently meeting with willing sellers along the Vineyard Connector corridor in an effort to purchase as much land as possible for future construction.
