The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has installed two new pedestrian signals on US-40 (Heber Main Street). The new crossings increase safety for both pedestrians and motorists.
100 NORTH - OVERHEAD FLASHING BEACON
The first upgrade is at 100 North, where an overhead flashing beacon was installed on the south leg of the intersection over the existing crosswalk. This beacon flashes yellow when activated by pedestrians and alerts drivers that the crosswalk is in use.
250 SOUTH - HAWK SIGNAL
The second upgrade was the installation of a high-intensity activated crosswalk (HAWK) signal at 250 South, across from the Main Street park. This signal was mounted on an overhead mast arm, similar to a traffic signal. When a pedestrian pushes the button to cross the street, flashing yellow lights are activated, followed by solid yellow lights and then solid red lights to warn drivers to stop. Pedestrians are then given the walk symbol, followed by a countdown showing how many seconds remain in the walk phase.
During the countdown, the lights over the road change from solid red to flashing red. After coming to a complete stop, drivers may proceed once the pedestrian has cleared the crosswalk, even if the lights are still flashing red. When the countdown ends, or if the crosswalk is not activated by a pedestrian, the lights remain off, and traffic is not required to stop. Please see the download tab for an illustration of the HAWK crossing process.
