Orem City and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) are working to address traffic congestion and safety on State Street in Orem. Current roadway conditions are resulting in growing congestion and a higher rate of crashes on this corridor, approximately one per day, than the state average. Congestion along the corridor will continue to increase if solutions arent implemented soon. Additionally, we heard from Orem residents at public events and a series of focus groups that they avoid State Street and drive to other cities for shopping and recreation. Making State Street more efficient, safer and predictable is an important priority for Orem City, business and property owners along the corridor and motorists throughout the City.
The project team is moving forward with improvements to the State Street intersections at Center Street and 800 North. A traffic study is underway in advance of potential improvements to the State Street intersection with University Parkway. Future intersection improvements are also planned for the State Street intersections at 400 North, 1200 North, 1600 North and 800 South as funding allows.
Solutions to address congestion and safety include improving signal timing, adding raised medians, allowing u-turns, extending or adding turn lanes, consolidating driveway accesses and improving side street connectivity.
