In early March of 2016, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) began a project to design and construct improvements to SR-9 between Rockville and Zion National Park. The project will be split into two segments. The first segment will be from Rockville to Springdale and will be constructed in early 2017. The second segment, Springdale to Zion National Park, will be constructed in late 2017 and early 2018.
The project will include the following elements:
• Shoulder widening between Rockville and Springdale
• Roadway resurfacing in Rockville – Resurfacing is when a new top layer of asphalt is added in order to extend the life of the roadway.
• Roadway reconstruction in Springdale – Reconstruction is when the roadway is excavated down to native ground and rebuilt. This provides an entirely new roadway section.
In addition, the project will also make improvements to the ditch system in Springdale and upgrade the bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
