UDOT celebrates one year of West Davis Highway, completes study for next expansion

One year after officially opening, the West Davis Highway (SR-177) is improving travel on I-15 in Davis County and on local roads for drivers.

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) engineers have observed about 28,000 vehicles per day use the new 16-mile, four-lane divided highway.

“That’s 28,000 vehicles that are also not on I-15,” UDOT Project Manager Corey Nelson said. “As northern Utah continues to grow, this highway is critical in preparing for it.”

The highway runs from I-15 near Glovers Lane in Farmington to SR-193 in West Point.

Now UDOT is looking to expand the highway further north. This week, UDOT completed the environmental study for the next expansion of SR-177 to 1800 North in West Point. Major construction is expected to begin in 2026.

UDOT built the project to be ready for the major growth expected in Davis and Weber counties. Now, one year later, the residents are benefitting from the highway’s increased capacity and connectivity.

“It’s honestly a game changer. The smoother, faster route has cut down my daily commute by at least 10-15 minutes each way,” Syracuse resident Kristin Stewart said. “That might not sound like much, but it’s made a huge difference in my day. I can now spend that extra time with my family or just enjoy a bit more relaxation before work. The design is well thought out, the traffic flow is much better, and the overall ride is a lot more enjoyable. I’m really impressed with how much it’s improved my daily routine—definitely a win for commuters.”

The new West Davis Highway is diverting traffic off I-15. The highway has been open for a year now, and an environmental study to extend it further north West Point was just completed.

For many residents, the highway’s biggest impact has been the time it saves during their daily commutes. Six new interchanges were added, easing congestion on local roads and improving travel times.

“My wife and I moved to Syracuse, just over a year ago, right before the West Davis Corridor opened. This new road has been a major time saver for both of us as we navigate our way up and down Davis County and beyond,” Trevor Warner said. “It’s easy to access, it’s not too busy, and it’s just extremely convenient. I can’t wait for the road to be extended further north.”

Additionally, to help people travel where they want in the way they want, UDOT added nearly 10 miles of new trails and connected existing regional trails.

“I love that I can leave Syracuse and travel to the south end of the valley without touching I-15 and without losing any time,” Syracuse resident Dan Furse said on the highway’s official Facebook group. “I also love that I no longer have to bike east on the roads to connect to the Denver Rio Grande rail trail. It’s much safer now that I have connecting trail access much closer to home.”
